In a synchrotron, electrons are accelerated to near the speed of light and are confined to a circular orbit in a linear accelerator (see Fig. 2).

(1) Electrons are generated and accelerated into the linear accelerator
(2) Electrons are then injected into the booster ring
(3) They are further accelerated to 99.987%, of the speed of light. They are then injected into the storage ring
(4) In the storage ring intense energy is released by the use of bending magnets or (in third generation synchrotrons) insertion devices
(5) The energy is then sent down beamlines
(6)The beam lines deliver the energy to experimental work stations where the exposure occurs
